New blood test may help predict worsening disability in multiple sclerosis

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, have developed a blood test capable of detecting worsening disability in multiple sclerosis (MS) one to two years before it occurs. The test focuses on the neurofilament light chain (NfL) as a biomarker, measuring nerve fibre damage. Elevated NfL levels were associated with up to a 91% higher risk of worsening disability with relapse about a year later and a 49% increased risk of worsening disability without relapse nearly two years later. The findings suggest the potential for early intervention and a shift in understanding the relationship between relapses and permanent disability in MS.
