Public satisfaction with NHS at lowest ever level, survey shows

The British Social Attitudes survey reveals a record low in public satisfaction with the NHS, with only 24% expressing contentment in 2023, down by five percentage points from the previous year and a significant drop from the peak of 70% satisfaction in 2010. Concerns over waiting times and staff shortages are cited as major factors contributing to this decline. Dissatisfaction with social care has also reached a new low at 13%. Despite this, there’s still substantial support for increasing taxes and spending on the NHS, with 48% backing this option. Individuals with higher incomes are more inclined towards increased taxation for healthcare.

Personal stories reflect the challenges faced by patients, including long waiting times and inadequate care. NHS leaders acknowledge the difficulties and pledge to focus on improving access to services and reducing waiting lists. Political parties are urged to address these challenges realistically, as the public remains supportive of the NHS’s core principles despite declining confidence in its ability to provide optimal care. However, the Department of Health and Social Care in England highlights progress in areas like reducing waiting lists and investing in essential services like GPs. The Scottish and Welsh governments express their commitment to improving NHS performance despite budget pressures.

How do you believe governments and healthcare organisations should address the challenges highlighted in the declining public satisfaction with the NHS, particularly regarding issues like waiting times, staff shortages, and funding constraints?

from personal experience, issues like long waiting times and staffing shortages are definitely the main issues. Sometimes its easier and faster for me to travel to my home country (spain) for a doctors appointment! I wonder if there are specific regions or areas within the NHS that are facing more challenges than others?

This is really concerning, there needs to be some of intense government action to step in, at the same time hopefully this won’t lead to more privatisation
