Public Speaking: From Panic to Stand-Up Comedy Level Confidence in 10 Easy Steps!

Overcoming the fear of public speaking takes practice and persistence. Here are some tips to help you improve your presentation skills:

Know Your Material:

  • Do not memorise it as a script! If you are nervous during the presentation your mind might go blank.
  • Make sure you thoroughly understand the content of your presentation. Knowing your material well will boost your confidence and make it easier to recover if you lose your train of thought.

Control Nervousness:

  • Practice relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, before you start your presentation to help manage nervousness.
  • Speaking slowly is important. When we’re anxious, our breath becomes shorter, and we may find ourselves out of breath, contributing to increased nervousness. Speaking slowly helps you regain control over your breath.
  • Practice in front of a mirror, record yourself, or present to a small and supportive audience like friends or family.
  • Visualise yourself giving a successful presentation. This positive visualisation can help build confidence and reduce anxiety.

Join Public Speaking Groups:

  • Join public speaking workshops!

Visual Aids:

  • Use visual aids like slides or props to enhance your presentation. Visuals can help convey complex information and keep your audience engaged.

Engage Your Audience:

  • Establish eye contact with your audience. This helps create a connection and makes you appear more confident.
  • Encourage questions and interaction. This can make the presentation feel less intimidating and more like a conversation.

Remember, public speaking is a skill that can be developed with time and practice. Be patient with yourself, and celebrate small victories along the way. Good luck with your presentations!

Fantastic tips! Completely agree with the idea of engaging with an audience when nervous can be a scary thought but when you try to have better eye contact with the audience it really does make you feel more confident.
