What area of teaching were you interested in? Or was it more of a general interest?

It’s totally understandable how our perceptions of different careers can be shaped when we’re young. The idea of being a teacher certainly has its appeal! As we grow older, we’re exposed to more job options and opportunities, which can lead us down different paths.

I think like all career choices, it’s necessary to get some good hard data. Things like pay, working hours etc. The some experience - do a taster course of some kind (many University Education departments and other training providers run these) and spend some time with a teacher(s) to find out exactly what the job entails and what current teachers feel about it.

Primary School teaching is very different to secondary teaching. Depending on your level of education and subject specialism, it may be possible for you to teach older children. You should explore this choice thoroughly to ensure that you make the choice that’s best for you. There are very few teachers who teach across the Primary/Secondary boundary, so this is important.

When applying for jobs in schools, just like any employer, it’s good to know as much about the school (and the Trust it’s in if it’s part of a MAT) … but that’s for another time!

Very true! I have friends who teach and what area of a city/county you teach in makes a whole world of difference. I think it becomes apparent fairly quickly to people whether they are cut out for it or not! Although the holiday time is obviously fantastic.
