Skin Cancer Risk Found Lower for Those With Vitiligo

A UK study spanning 2010-2020 found that individuals with vitiligo have a 38% lower risk of any skin cancer, including a 61% lower risk of melanoma. Led by John Ferguson at Guy’s Hospital, the study involved 15,156 vitiligo patients and 60,615 matched controls, offering reassurance about skin cancer risks in vitiligo. Caution was advised, emphasising the continued need for sun protection. Limitations included potential underrepresentation of vitiligo patients and the study’s reliance on a Pfizer-sponsored database, with authors disclosing financial relationships with pharmaceutical companies.
