Submit questions about being an academic researcher!

Next week, I will be meeting with my dissertation supervisor and lecturer, Emma Moffett to ask her about her work as an academic researcher!

Emma has studied at the University of Auckland and has conducted research with the University of California: Irvine, Imperial College London, and King’s College London. Her research is concerned with the effects of urbanization on freshwater ecosystems, the relationship of biodiversity and ecosystem function, and human effects and invasive species effects on ecosystems.

If you have any questions about her research or any general questions about what it’s like as an academic researcher, please drop them in the replies below and I can incorporate them into my interview! :seedling:

Wow, your supervisor do have a lot of experiences working in different countries! How has working in different countries affected her?

I’d love to know more about her experience with different research environments around the world and how they’ve shaped her perspective on environmental challenges.

We are actually curious about something similar haha

That sounds so exciting! Could you ask her if she’s found any particular city design features or urban planning strategies that seem to help reduce negative impacts on freshwater ecosystems? Also, I’d love to know what she thinks are the biggest challenges for young researchers starting out in this field.

One question I’d love to ask her is how she sees the relationship between urban development and biodiversity shifting over the next few decades, especially with climate change becoming more of a concern. Do you think urban planning can adapt to protect ecosystems, or is it more about managing the damage that’s already been done?

Also, how does she balance fieldwork with academic publishing and teaching? Would love to hear about how she manages the different aspects of her work!
