Tips on building up a portfolio

A portfolio is important to add to and to maintain, as it demonstrates your skills, abilities and initiative to future employers. Here are some tips for building one up:

  • A wide range of diverse projects - showing many similar projects might show you not wanting to leave your comfort zone; however, showing different types of projects, and the usage of different technologies shows that you can adapt

  • Updating the portfolio regularly - demonstrates commitment and staying up to date

  • Design process is also important - in addition to linking the finalised code GitHub repository, or screenshots of the finished product, the development process and workflow is also good to show, as it demonstrates the steps you took to deliver the project

  • It is a good idea to include a story or an “about” section - this is in addition to the code and projects, it is good for employers to discover more about you and your interests

  • Do not go overboard by showing absolutely every project - small, basic and uncompleted side projects would do more harm than good, so it is best to stick to complete projects
