Warning pet owners could be overpaying for medicine

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has raised concerns regarding transparency in the veterinary sector, highlighting that pet owners are often not provided with essential information such as price lists online or the cost of treatment before agreeing to it. After examining thousands of veterinary practice websites, the CMA found that over 80% lacked pricing information, potentially leading to pet owners overpaying for medicines or prescriptions. The British Veterinary Association emphasized that vets prioritize animal welfare. However, in response to these issues, the CMA has provisionally decided to launch a formal market investigation, which could result in interventions such as compelling companies to disclose business information and imposing limits on prices. The pet industry is valued at £2 billion, with concerns raised over the lack of information available to the 16 million pet owners in the UK.

I wonder how this issue could be addressed to ensure that pet owners are fully informed about treatment costs and can make the best decisions for their furry friends. What do you think could be done to improve transparency and affordability in the veterinary sector?

This is just horrible to hear. In my country there’s a list of treatments, prices, and transparency about them in any veterinary clinic
