What are career politicians ?

The term “career politicians” refers to individuals who have made a long-term commitment to a political career and have spent a significant portion of their professional lives working in politics. These individuals often pursue a career path within political parties, government institutions, or other political organizations.

Career politicians may start their political journey by being elected to local government positions, such as councillors or mayors, and then progress to higher levels of government, such as Members of Parliament (MPs) or members of devolved assemblies (in the case of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland). Some career politicians may also serve in ministerial positions or hold leadership roles within political parties.

The term “career politician” is sometimes used in a neutral or descriptive sense, indicating that an individual has chosen a long-term political career as their profession. However, it can also be used pejoratively, suggesting that the individual may be disconnected from the concerns of ordinary citizens or that they are more focused on political advancement than on addressing the needs of their constituents.

It’s important to note that having a career in politics is not negative, as many politicians are dedicated public servants who work diligently to represent their constituents and contribute to the political process. However, public perception of career politicians can vary, and discussions around the topic often touch on issues of accountability, representation, and the potential for political elites.

Always thought that career politican term was only used to describe people who have chosen to work in politics. Would have never presumed it can be used in a negative way!
