What is going on with UK universities?

The government has decided to make some major changes recently which might end up impacts students throughout the country and even those who are already attending.

Do you think this will impact the number of prospective students in the upcoming years.?

  • Definitely going to lower the number in the new cohort
  • Don’t know yet, have to wait and see
  • Things will probably stay the same, don’t think its a big deal

Difficult to tell what the effect on UK student numbers will be. International student numbers will increase for sure, as universities look to leverage the higher fees they pay in order to plug the gap between fee income and course costs.

One thing is for sure - the student loan system will explode at some point in the next 20 years, when unpaid student loans are forecast to reach almost ÂŁ0.5 trillion (ie ÂŁ500 billion). Of course, this debt is held off the government books (through the Student Loan Company), otherwise it would sink the UK economy.

Meanwhile, students complain about the cost of their studies, and vice-chancellors bemoan the fact that national higher education finances are in a mess and hope that international students continue to flock to the UK in the face of hostile current government rhetoric about “uncontrolled immigration”.
