Having anxiety before university seminars

Experiencing anxiety in seminars or similar settings is not uncommon and can be managed effectively. Here are some tips to help cope with anxiety in seminars:

  1. Preparation: Prepare thoroughly for the seminar by reviewing the material beforehand. Being well-prepared can help alleviate some anxiety about feeling unprepared.
  2. Positive Self-Talk: Challenge negative thoughts and replace them with positive affirmations. Remind yourself of your abilities and past successes.
  3. Breathing Exercises: Practice deep breathing or other relaxation techniques to help calm your mind and body before and during the seminar.
  4. Focus on the Present: Instead of worrying about what might go wrong or how others perceive you, focus on the present moment and the task at hand.
  5. Engage with Others: Participate actively in discussions or group activities during the seminar. Engaging with others can help distract you from anxious thoughts and build confidence.
  6. Seek Support: If your anxiety is significantly impacting your ability to participate in seminars or other academic activities, consider seeking support from a counselor, therapist, or mental health professional. They can provide strategies and support tailored to your individual needs.
  7. Practice Exposure: Gradually expose yourself to seminar-like situations to desensitize yourself to the anxiety triggers. Start with smaller, less intimidating settings and gradually work your way up.

Couldn’t agree more. Seminars used to terify me in the first year of uni, but the more i practised, the easier it was getting. Plus, understanding that everyone is in the same boat and may as well be as scared as you are would definitely help you to get more confident!
