Hungover but socially anxious?

This amazing article talk about ways to boost your social confidence when in public without having a drink.

For many people having a drink helps them to retrain extent with their social anxiety and enjoy their events more; but weather is because you are trying to cut down alcohol, avoid hungover, drive back , got early commitments in the morning or simply save money. Having other options is always convenient.

Millie Gooch author and founder of The Sober girl society came up with some strategies to have fun sober.

Keep a nonalcoholic drink in your hand. One thing that’s nice about drinking at social events is that constantly holding a drink gives you a physical anchor, something to do with your hands.

Focus on the positives. No matter what your “why” is for not drinking, reminding yourself of your resolve can boost your confidence about your decision to challenge yourself.

Tell people you’re uncomfortable. It may sound counterintuitive, but Gooch found that telling her friends, “I’m feeling uncomfortable, so if I’m acting a bit weird, that’s why” automatically took away the power of it, she said.

Bring a friend who doesn’t drink, either. This can help you feel less alone in your decision.

Don’t overprepare. Thinking of a few topics to discuss with people is fine, experts said, but overpreparing can make you seem stiff and prevent your brain from learning how to adapt to a dynamic situation.

Navigating social settings sober can feel scary and impossible, but Kuda and Gooch can attest to the results of giving it a try and keeping at it.

I feel like young people especially are constantly peer-pressured or looked down upon if we’re not participating in drinking, so many of us end up developing this horrible habbit. And even if not that, drinking as a way to get more confident is way more common that we may think.

Going sober for a month is a good way to get rid of this habit, by maybe thinking about it as a challenge. And then, when you realise the benefits and how much better you and your body feels, then sticking to it as a matter of habit.

By the end of the day, always remember that drinking would only impact you in a bad way:

  1. Alcohol in a long-term will affect your physical appearance in the worst way possible, so ypur confidence would suffer even more.
  2. There are many ways how to get more confident around other people without drinking.
  3. Ask your friends for support, they would most likely be happy to support and help at least provide you with their comforting presence in uncomfortable situations :hugs:
