Cancer Mortality Set to Decline in 2024

A study predicts a decline in total cancer mortality rates in the European Union (EU) between 2018 and 2024, with a 6.5% decrease among men and a 4.3% decrease among women.

Nearly 6.2 million cancer deaths are estimated to have been avoided in the EU from 1989 to 2024, with 1.3 million in the UK. However, there are increases in colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality for young adults in certain countries like Italy, the UK, Poland, Spain (men), and Germany (women). In the EU, lung cancer mortality may increase in females, and pancreatic cancer mortality may rise in both sexes. Despite overall declines in CRC mortality across all age groups in the EU, there are concerning trends for CRC mortality among young adults in some countries.

The study underscores the ongoing importance of addressing tobacco use, particularly among women, in combating cancer mortality in Europe.
