"More Needs to Be Done to Reduce Suicide": Latest Data Released

The most recent Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures for 2022 showed 5,642 suicides in England and Wales, with the highest age-standardised mortality rate (ASMR) in over 20 years.

Despite a historically low suicide rate in the last two decades, there has been a steady increase since 2018, reaching 10.7 deaths per 100,000 in 2022.

Regional variations exist, with the North East having the highest rate (12.8 per 100,000) and London the lowest (7.0 per 100,000). Males continue to have a three times higher suicide rate than females, with the highest rate in those aged 50 to 54.

The suicide prevention strategy includes tailored support for priority groups, addressing common risk factors, and implementing practical measures at local and national levels. The goal is to achieve the lowest suicide rates ever recorded through comprehensive investments and renewed funding for local suicide prevention.
