Protest after breastfeeding mother asked to move

Dozens of mothers and children gathered at Guernsey’s Premier Inn in solidarity with a mother who was asked not to breastfeed there. Kelly Corbin shared on social media that she felt humiliated after being asked by a staff member to feed her baby “out of the way of the public.” Premier Inn apologised for the incident, stating that breastfeeding mothers are wholeheartedly welcome in all their sites across the UK. The protest organised by Rebecca Greening aimed to show support for the mother and challenge such incidents.

Around 30 women and children gathered at the hotel, with some breastfeeding their babies in the restaurant. Premier Inn provided free teas, coffees, and snacks to the mothers during the protest. Despite the incident, one woman described the behaviour of staff as “absolutely lovely.” As we reflect on this event, what steps can businesses take to ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment for breastfeeding mothers, and how can communities support individuals facing similar challenges?

Businesses can ensure a welcoming environment for breastfeeding mothers by educating staff, implementing clear policies, and providing comfortable spaces. Communities can offer solidarity, advocate for awareness, and foster support networks for individuals facing discrimination while breastfeeding.
