Translating aspirations into actions: Women and girls in sport

Often, despite our good intentions to make sport better for women and girls, the translation of these aspirations into tangible actions often proves elusive.

There are so many small, positive steps we can take each day, within our teams, our schools, our clubs, our communities which will make the experience of sport better for women and girls.

Here’s are The Well HQ’s top 3 moments from the past week:

:rugby_football: Freshmill Limited was approached to sponsor Dry Robes for the girls U14 rugby team. Rather than just putting the businesses name on some match day rugby shirts, the Dry Robes meant that the girls, for the first time, found it easy to change on the side of the pitch (which is unfortunately where they had to change due to lack of female changing rooms).

The point being, brilliant support from a local business, with a creative use of the money, has meant the girls feel much happier (and of course warmer!) on match day.

:martial_arts_uniform: Witnessing some brilliant coaching cues to the girls when their squats and lunges looked particularly worrying on the technique front. The coach was just doing what he knew best, and didn’t make a big deal of it, but so many times in grassroot sport, poor movement technique isn’t picked up, and this can add to injury risk, especially in girls. Some really simple coaching cues ensured that the girls were embedding good movement technique and protecting themselves against injury.

:trophy: A PE teacher sent a picture of the ‘Know Your Body’ noticeboard she had created for the girls changing room, with the infographics and posters from The Well HQ course, plus some resources she had created herself. There’s nothing better to normalise these topics (periods, sports bra’s, pelvic health) than to plaster the wall with positive, empowering information about them.
