Using a computer science degree in medicine

There are various skills which are mutual to both computer science and medicine. Some people currently working towards or having achieved a computer science degree or related, may be interested in applying their skills in the field of medicine. Here are some examples:

  • Bioinformatics - this is a field where computer science is applied to biology, using computational techniques to model, collate and analyse biological information
  • Software and hardware developer for medicinal physics machines - writing code and developing hardware to control x-rays, CAT, PET machines
  • Medical robotics - applying robotics techniques to medicinal robots
  • Healthcare data analyst - use data analysis and statistical techniques to derive useful insights from data
  • Field epidemiology - using a combination of computer science fields, such as data science, big data processing, AI, geographical information systems, etc, can lead to more accurately detecting and understanding the spread of diseases
  • Healthcare Information Technology Management - creating comprehensive and user friendly information management systems, to more effectively and seamlessly manage hospital administration, including patients, staff, distribution of medicine, etc

These are just some interesting careers in medicine that one could pursue with a computer science degree.
