Athlete Spotlight 4: Laura Sugar

Laura Sugar was a Welsh international hockey player before she started competing in athletics in 2013 after being inspired by the Paralympic Games in 2012.

Sugar finished fourth and fifth in the 200m and 100m respectively at her maiden World Championships in 2013 before going on to claim two bronze medals in the same events at the European Championships in Swansea a year later.

In 2016 she again claimed 200m bronze at the European Championships, going one better over 100m with a silver medal behind Germany’s Irmgard Bensusan.

Sugar went on to finish fifth in both sprint events at Rio 2016, then competed in front of a home crowd at the 2017 World Championships in London, but was unable to make the podium.

Sugar switched to Para canoe and enjoyed a terrific debut season in 2019, winning European bronze and World Championship silver in the women’s KL3 class.

Despite a cancelled 2020 season due to Covid-19, Sugar can’t wait to compete once gain with the aim of improving and winning further medals on the world stage for Great Britain.
