A recent study by Cambridge University Press & Assessment, the largest of its kind, reveals that girls consistently outperform boys in academic performance from primary school through university in the UK. The study, analyzing publicly available datasets covering various education stages, indicates that despite these advantages, gender disparities persist in employment, including gaps in pay, opportunities, and skill utilization. The researchers found that educational reforms and the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic did not alter existing patterns, though teacher-graded assessments may disadvantage some male pupils. Notably, in the field of mathematics, male students consistently outperformed females. The study highlights the need to address the underrepresentation of young women in STEM subjects and explores potential implications for the labour market.
