Recent concerns about the impact of GCSE or A-Level exams on student mental health have been highlighted in the society. School leaders and educators are raising attention about the high levels of anxiety and distress experienced by students under the current exam system, which was significantly altered by previous government policies.
A survey conducted by Teacher Tapp for the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) reveals that over 75% of educators have observed poor mental health among Year 11 students linked to exam anxiety. The current GCSE system, which focuses on high-stakes end-of-course exams with minimal coursework, has been criticized for exacerbating student anxiety. ASCL’s general secretary, Pepe Di’Iasio, argues that these changes have had detrimental effects on students’ mental well-being and calls for a review of the exam system to address these issues. The Labour government’s recent review of the curriculum and assessment aims to balance assessment methods while maintaining exam integrity.
As the debate continues, it is clear that finding a balance between rigorous assessments and student well-being will be crucial for shaping a more supportive and effective educational environment.
It’s so concerning to see how GCSE and A-Level exams are affecting students’ mental health. It’s clear we need to find a better balance between tough exams and supporting students. Glad to see the conversation happening!
This is definitely a big issue! I remember feeling super stressed during my exams too, so I can totally relate to what students are going through. Do you think there could be alternative ways to assess students that might reduce anxiety but still reflect their knowledge and abilities? I’m really interested in what changes could be made to make the whole experience less overwhelming.
That is a really good question. People might not agree with my view but I do think taking an exam could be considered as the fairest choice considering that students might come from different family backgrounds with different financial status. Meanwhile, I believe more mental health support, especially those focus on ‘exam stress’ should be provided. Schools should make sure that it is always easy and avilable for students to approach support needed.
For someone who’s an international student, the UK’s system of education sounds extremely stressful! It’s nowhere near as bad in Europe, and i’m genuinely feel bad for every single teenager or soon-to-be student who have to go through this
Thank you for sharing your perspective! I agree that exams can level the playing field, but it’s also crucial to have strong mental health support in place for students.
