Eczema breakthrough as unlikely cure for itch is found

Scientists at Harvard are on the brink of a breakthrough in eczema treatment by identifying the bacteria triggering the itch.

The researchers found that the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, present in about 30% of people, releases an enzyme that activates nerves in the skin, leading to the urge to scratch. To break this cycle, they propose using the approved blood clot treatment vorapaxar, turning it into a topical cream.

This approach aims to prevent the sensation of itchy skin from reaching the brain. The research suggests a potential breakthrough for the one in five children and one in ten adults suffering from eczema.
