Living in student accommodation for the first time

Living in student accommodation can be tough, here are some tips to help:

  1. Get to Know Your Roommates: Whether you’re living in dorms or in private accommodation, take the time to get to know your roommates. Building a good relationship with them can make your living situation much more enjoyable.
  2. Respect Each Other’s Space: It’s important to establish boundaries and respect each other’s privacy. Make sure to communicate openly about your expectations regarding noise, guests, and sharing common areas.
  3. Stay Organised: Keep your living space clean and organized. This will help you feel more comfortable and focused on your studies.
  4. Be Considerate: Remember that you’re living in close quarters with other people, so be considerate of their needs and schedules. Avoid being excessively loud, especially late at night when students have classes the next day!.
  5. Participate in Community Events: Many student accommodations organise social events and activities. Take advantage of these opportunities to meet new people and make friends.

Some really great advice  I particularly appreciate the emphasis on getting to know your roommates and building a good relationship with them. This can truly make a significant difference in your overall living experience, creating a supportive and enjoyable environment.

One additional point I would suggest is setting up a method for open communication among roommates, whether it’s a group chat, a shared bulletin board, or regular house meetings. This channel can be invaluable for discussing concerns, resolving conflicts, and coordinating shared responsibilities effectively!

You don’t know how different people’s hygiene habits are (or lack thereof) until you move into accom with them

I swear, you should definitely be prepared for messy housemates/flatmates. I fought a lot of battles with them to ensure clean environment in the communal kitchen lmao
