New estimate doubles likely deaths from fungal disease globally

A new study led by Professor David Denning from The University of Manchester reveals that the annual global death toll from fungal diseases has doubled to 3.75 million, a figure twice the previous estimate.

The research draws on data from over 80 countries and involves collaboration with over 300 professionals worldwide. The updated mortality figures highlight the significant impact of fungal diseases, surpassing deaths from single pathogens like malaria and tuberculosis.

The study suggests that approximately 68% of the deaths (2.55 million) were directly caused by fungal diseases, with the remainder linked to underlying health conditions.
