'Our son's cancer care before his death was brutal'

A couple from Kent, whose four-year-old son Zac died of a rare brain tumor, are advocating for gentler treatments for children with cancer. Zac Staples was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer in March 2021 and passed away in April 2022 after enduring multiple surgeries, proton beam therapy, and high-dose chemotherapy. His father, Luke Staples, expressed hope that future research will prevent other families from experiencing such hardship. The couple supports a £1.5 million investment by The Brain Tumour Charity into a research project aimed at understanding the cancer Zac had and developing kinder treatment options for children.

That’s such a heartbreaking story. It’s amazing that they’re turning their tragedy into advocacy for better treatments. How do you think increased funding and research into rare cancers can improve the overall approach to pediatric oncology?
