Paid leave for NHS staff experiencing pregnancy loss

The NHS has introduced a groundbreaking policy to provide staff who experience a miscarriage with up to 10 days of additional paid leave. This initiative, a first in the healthcare sector, aims to support staff members through the trauma of pregnancy loss. The policy also extends to partners, offering them up to 5 days of paid leave. NHS trusts will follow national guidance to ensure staff receive paid time off for medical appointments and mental health support related to pregnancy loss. The decision to implement paid leave for miscarriage follows a successful trial at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Trust, where staff retention rates increased as a result.

With 1 in 4 pregnancies ending in miscarriage in the UK, this policy represents a significant step towards providing compassionate support to NHS staff during a difficult time. The initiative has been welcomed by healthcare professionals and advocacy groups, who emphasise the importance of supporting individuals through the grieving process.

It’s such an important step towards supporting them through such a difficult time. I’m glad to see initiatives like this recognising the need for compassion and understanding in the workplace. Do you think other sectors will follow suit and implement similar policies to support their employees?

Providing paid leave for miscarriage recognizes the emotional toll it takes and shows they really care about their staff. So glad to see progress in supporting those who need it most
